Mission Beach Day
On March 25, 2004, the entire 4th grade descended upon Ledbetter
Beach to partake in their annual Mission Beach Day. This activity
is the culmination of almost
a month’s worth of study about California missions. Each student
was assigned a report on a specific mission. These students met with small
groups
studying the same mission from the fourth grade classes. They researched
together and shared ideas. As the report drew to a close the group made
blueprints and signs for the mission they were studying.
On Mission Beach Day “El Camino Real” was recreated with each group
receiving a spot, in mission order, along the real in which to build their mission.
The students got to work early that morning and by noon were finished with terrific
mission replicas made out of sand and supplies brought from home. It was time
to stop and enjoy a “fiesta style” lunch generously supplied and
served by our wonderful families. With lunch complete, it was time to take our
walk down “El Camino Real”. Each group started by admiring their
own mission and when the “mission bell” rang, proceeded the “day’s
walk” to the next mission. It was a way to end our study of missions
and fun was had by all.
