Welcome to Room 15!
My name is Mr. Barker. I have been living in Santa Barbara since 2002, when I came to get my Master’s Degree in Education and my Teaching Credential from the UCSB program. I am a Californian through and through. I grew up in Mammoth Lakes California and moved to San Diego in 1997 to get my undergraduate degree from UCSD. At UCSD I studied European History and Spanish Literature. During my stay at this university I was able to get away for a year and live in several different Spanish speaking countries, picking up my Spanish Language Skills.
I love teaching in Santa Barbara and attempt to bring my love of learning, language and sports to the classroom everyday. During the year I expose the children to experiences in the Spanish language and to different sports. I try to do this in a fun and memorable way so that children leave my class with a positive disposition toward learning the Spanish language and sports.
From 2003 until 2007 I taught first and second grade. Now I teach a fifth and sixth grade combination class. I truly enjoy the exuberance, thoughtfulness and attentiveness that each student brings into the classroom. It has to be one of the most positive working environments in society. Since 2003 I have found a passion in teaching reading and writing. I truly enjoy watching the students mature in their abilities in these core areas.
