Nutrition is important at Vieja Valley!

Sharon Applegate, Nutrition Consultant, visits the classrooms

to teach children about keeping their bodies healthy, eating well and getting exercise.

Activities celebrating March as National Nutrition Month include:

1. Farm-fresh snow peas, cherry tomatoes and just-picked carrots for everyone during lunch.

Children learn orange carrots, green peas and red tomatoes have different vitamins and minerals that work together to keep our bodies healthy.

2. Vegetable and Fruit Count :

A contest for all of the children to see if they can eat 5-a-day*.

Everyone who tries for the school week, gets a prize.

3. Smoothie bar during lunch.

Children see how easy it is to make a calcium-rich smoothie and to get a fruit serving, too.

4. Poster contest with prizes for all participants.

At Vieja Valley, our goal is to teach children that the food they eat does make a difference in how they feel, how they concentrate, and how much energy they have. We like to see children eating a healthy mid-morning snack and a healthy lunch because they understand they need high quality fuel to do their best at school. Healthy habits learned now will help them as they grow.

If you haven't been by our school vegetable garden lately, please visit.

Think about the different parts of the plants we eat: roots, leaves, stems, flowers...

Enjoy the beauty. Harvest a pea pod!

If you are interested in helping with the garden,

please contact Mrs. Seigel-Boettner in Room 3.
