Moon Journals

We observed the night sky for a month. Every night, even on the weekends, we looked up into the night sky. At first, we could not see the moon. The first two weeks, we watched the moon wax into the quarter moon and then the full moon. We watched another week, as the moon waned into the last quarter moon. The last week, we watched as the moon finally slipped out of sight. We noticed all sorts of star constellations, too!

Everyone kept at least 3 journal entries a week. We wrote the date, time and detailed observations of the night sky. Some nights we drew, painted, collaged or wrote poems. Here are some of our entries. Enjoy!

Moon Journal Entries

It smells damp and fresh. The clouds in the sky are gray and it looks like it is going to rain. There is no moon out tonight.
Josh

Empty as a balloon
Moping with sorrow
Pleading to watch over the earth
Trying to tear the clouds away
Yawning with its sorrow

Skylight is gone
Knitting over the moon
Yawning with despair
Zevy

Moonlight glow
Oh what a show
Owls fly at
Night, what a sight

Light so bright
It glistens in the night
Gleaming in the air
Hope it's always there
Thank God for the moon
Gabe

New moon nothing to see.
The nightlight in the sky has been put out.
Mason

Create shadows
Reach to the sky
Atmosphere
Thunder exploding in the sky
Exploring the moon
Ring of ice
Storm is passing
Gregory

Stars are light,
Planets are bright.
The light is out,
Again tonight!
Clay

I saw the moon. It was beautiful and bright.
Kassy

There was no moon. Everything I could see was rain and clouds.
Jackie

Qui Gon can see it
Under the clouds
A rare sight
Rental for the night
Time is running out
Entering the moon
Rocks when you look
Spencer

New Moon
Now the moon is gone.
All you can see is the stars and the dark night sky and maybe some constellations, too.
It's still pretty without the moon but even better with it.
Julia

Dazzling moon is gone.

All the light is gone.

Rain is coming.

Kids are sleeping.

My eyes want to see the moon.

Oh! The moon is special.

Oh! I wish I could see it.

No moon.

Grace

Moon in the air
On the clouds
On heaven
No one will not look.

Catherine

Special kind of moon.
My kind of moon.
If the moon wasn't there, I wouldn't see any stars.
Life is way better with the moon.
It makes you smile.
Exactly what I like.

Fancy kind of moon.
A moon like this is better than a new moon.
Can you see the moon?
Earth is a great place to see the moon!
Ramin

Rare to see this happen
Amazing amounts of rain
Imagining the moon out
No moon out tonight
Incredible rain came down
Nothing we can see
Glowing light might come tonight
Emerson

Last night, I went outside.

I saw the Little Dipper, the Big Dipper, Orion's Belt, and the Milky Way.

I also saw the planet Mars.
It was really red and I saw a little Mt. Everest on top of it.
Jasmine

Oh Rainy Day
Rain is pouring down in the night,
I'm predicting rain tomorrow.
I miss the moon and the moon misses Room 3.
We miss you, moon!
Emily

Shines like a lamp
High up
In the clouds
No other moon
In the deep sky
Not much to see
Going away

Magic moon
Out in the deep sky
On top of the earth
Natural cycle

Dark Night

The sky is dark tonight. There is no light to see the moon shine bright.
The night is dark, cold and crisp, cool, and warm.
The wind is still, there is no sound to hear.
I look up. There are no stars.
There is nothing more than dark, dark clouds that cover the sky in total darkness.
As I look to see the moon, it is not there in the dark air.
I look to see the bright, bright light. There is not one in sight.
No light to guide me through the night. No light I see, no stars, no moon.
No planets to guide me in the gloom.
I reach out for light, light bright. It smells wet and damp in the cool damp puddles of darkness.
I wait for light, light in the night. And there, the moon is finally out.
And now there is light to guide me through the night.

Kelly

Sorry moon,
I have to go now for the rest of the year.
Bye,
Wipe away your tears.
Gregory

Rap Song
What's up?
Moon, I'm watching cartoons.
I do not know about you.
Did you make a rap and tap-tap-tap?
And say, Oh yah! Oh yah!
It's all like a bike going on a trail to Yale!
Spencer

The moon is shining,
It is shining brightly.
It's mirroring sun.

New moon in a week.
Every day there are stars in the sky.
We can see constellations in the sky if you look closely.

Moon- how you shine so bright.
Opening jaws open,
Opening jaws open to you.
Now come out and they will bow to you.
Jasmine

Good night moon.
Oh, how the moon shines.
Oh, what stars shine.
Do you say good night?

No moon at all.
I love the moon a lot.
Good-bye moon.
Have a good night,
To the moon.
Kassy

I saw no moon.
We went walking, but no moon.
We were playing hide and seek.
Jackie

Good-bye, moon.
I will see you when you come again
So I wanted to say bye.
I hope you have a good vacation
And have lots of fun.
And tell your brother and sister, "Bye!"
Josh

Tonight I see gray
I only see the streetlights
The sky is foggy
Gabe

The stars come out in the sky,
They are just floating up high.
They blink on the clouds.
There are lots of clouds.
But there is no moon to be seen.
I think the moon is trying to be mean!

Chase

Yo Mister moon,

What's up in the sky?
It must be very cool
Hangin' with all the stars so high.
I know you're so far away.
That's okay because
When I close my eyes
I always awake to a brand new day!
Chase's Dad

Notes from my family because there is so much to say when the moon is going away!

"You are the moon and stars to me. I love you so much!" -- Mommy
"Away, away, the moon shall not stay, but will come back another day. Thank you for the darkness and the light, for this is what gives me my loving in sight." -- Dad
"You are so pretty. Thanks for brightening up the night." -- Kate
"Moon, please stay, but you're going away." -- Krista
"I can not talk, but my sissy is writing for me. I love you! -- Kelly
"Bye bye moon. I'll be waiting." --Derek

Krista and family

Good-bye moon,
Good-bye moon.
You will soon be new,
You will soon be out of sight.
It will be dark out at night,
It is tonight.
Kelly

Moons can be seen with butterflies and stars,
With flowers, a heart, a gentle smile, and happy eyes.
Some planets are decorated with stars and rainbows.
You can also see moons with smiley faces and peace signs,
And you can see stars with dragonflies, too.
Good-bye, moon!
Catherine

The sky is dark black,
I can only see the stars,
Stars are bright at night!
Ramin

Nothing
Only clouds

Dear Moon,
Good-bye!
I will still look up at you every night!
Here is a poem for you:
Moon
On top of the world
Out in space
Never going away
From,
Mason

Dear Moon,

I am very sorry that you have to go. This is my last entry to you. You are starting to go away.

Moon, I hope you come back. I really liked my Moon Journal.

Good-bye, moon.

Love,
Clay

Moon
There are lots of stars.
The moon shines like a crystal.
There are planets, too.
Emerson

Not there, not bright.

Not there to give out light.

Some people know that you're just like a kite

But I know with all my might,

That you are the greatest, you are my dream.

You are the one and only beam.

You seam together the life of humans.

You are the greatest, you are the beam.

Zevy

Hiding moon
It cannot be seen
Do you see it because I don't
It is there we just don't see it
Now the moon can't be seen
Goodness gracious, why isn't it there?

Moon, moon, where are you?
Oh where are you?
Oh no, where are you?
No, the clouds are just covering the moon!
Julia
