Moon Journals

We observed the night sky for a month. Every night, even on the weekends, we looked up into the night sky. At first, we could not see the moon. The first two weeks, we watched the moon wax into the quarter moon and then the full moon. We watched another week, as the moon waned into the last quarter moon. The last week, we watched as the moon finally slipped out of sight. We noticed all sorts of star constellations, too!

Everyone kept at least 3 journal entries a week. We wrote the date, time and detailed observations of the night sky. Some nights we drew, painted, collaged or wrote poems. Here are some of our entries. Enjoy!

Moon Journal Entries

Dear Moon,
I always look forward to seeing you at night. Soon you are going to be full. Have you ever wanted to meet the sun? You are so beautiful to look at. Have you ever wondered what it looks like in the daytime? Sometimes I see you peeking into the daytime. What phase do you like to be in the best? Did you enjoy when Neil Armstrong walked on you? Did you enjoy meeting him? It must be much different living on earth than living in space. What is your favorite constellation? I like the Big Dipper. It must be neat to see the constellations up close. Is it tiring to spin around and orbit the earth at the same time? Does it feel weird to change phases every day? Thank you for lighting up the sky at night.
Signed,
Kelly

Black Sky
By Aidan

Black sky, black sky
Dark to my eye.
I cannot see through you as hard as I try.
Quiet sky, quiet sky
Still to my ear.
I am safe beneath you.
I have nothing to fear.

Dear Moon,
How big is your crater? How many miles are you away from the sun? How many miles are you away from Mars? How many moon rocks do you have?
Love,
Kelsey

Sliver

There only is a sliver of that
Great big moon in space.
I think I saw some aliens
Joining in a race.
The aliens were racing all around the moon,
I thought I heard it muttering something about June.

Moon
By Katie

Moon, moon,
You give us light
In the dark sky
Where there's only
Stars in the darkness.

The moon is full. It is so bright, it is like a homemade flashlight. I thought the moon wasn't out, and I saw a light. But when I looked up higher, I saw it was the moon.
P.S. I do not see any stars.

Crescent
By Nicholas

Crescent is a moon
Very, very curved
It lives in the sky
It lives with the stars and the
Big Dipper that it serves.

Tonight the moon is a waning gibbous. It was 50 % out of a full moon. I saw lots of stars.

I couldn't see the moon.

I hope the moon comes out tonight!

No Moon. The stars are up, but there is no moon in the sky. Where is that great moon?

Dear Moon,
You shine so bright. It looks like you're so close. I could just reach into the sky and grab you! What is it like being the moon? Do you get a very good view of the earth? Can you see Jupiter? Is it really big? Every night I look up in the sky and I love to see you up there. New Moon is okay, but I like it when you are full. Do you feel lonely sometimes? Were you happy when Neil Armstrong came to visit?
Love,
Julia

I can really see the moon,
The moon,
The moon.
I can really see the moon
Shining all the clouds out of its way.
Shining a light that I see
Even from very far away.
Shining so hard that if I tried to stop it,
I wouldn't believe my eyes
Because I just saw a rocket.

Dear Full Snow Moon,
How do you seem to change shape? How did you
get up there? How did you get built? Why is there gravity? Why do astronauts go on you? Why are you called the moon? Have they ever planted a plant on you? Why doesn't space have air? Are you afraid of the dark? Are you cold up there?
From,
Jesse

Have you ever seen the moon?
At midnight you can see it.
Late at night it will come out.
Far up in the sky.
Many stars around the moon
Only at night
On the dark ceiling
Nothing in the sky
But the moon and stars.

Moon is bright
Moon is white
Moon is giving us
A lot of light!

Can you see me? I saw no moon. I saw no moon. All I see is stars.

Oh what is that? What do I see? Oh goody, I see Orion's Belt.

Moon, moon,
Where are you?
Oh! Such a beautiful sight is gone.
Oh! The stars are bright.
Night has come.
