Super Second Grade

Marvelous Math Magic Video Production

ArtsBridge Scholar Makes a Math Video With Second Graders

Debbie Heimowitz, an energetic University of California at Santa Barbara ArtsBridge scholar and film studies major, worked with Lynn Seigel-Boettner and her second graders at Vieja Valley School. Under Debbie's playful guidance, the students created a video project called "Super Second Graders Marvelous Math Magic."

Debbie invited her talented friend, Kim, to write an original musical score for our video. When the students talk about various segments of our project, they love to hum Kim's delightful songs. Kim treated our class to a mini piano concert and explanation of her work as a composer. It was an honor to have Kim join our creative team!

The goals of the project were for students to learn more about the video art form, while expressing themselves through visual arts. As they acquired new math skills aligned with the latest state standards, they were able to share their knowledge with other lower grade students with the production of their fun and entertaining video. The students produced their first skit to teach fractions. They constructed a larger-than-life purple flower and picked giant petals off, one-sixth at a time! With Debbie's expertise and enthusiasm, the students in Room 3 are truly, "Marvelous Math Magicians!"
