Vieja Valley
Computer Lab
Once again, I am excited to begin the new school year. The students are ready to learn. They seem to understand that the technology tools, ideas, concepts, and experiences shared in the Computer Lab are going to have a significant impact on their lives. They apply their learning immediately in their classrooms, and more and more, are using their technology skills in their everyday lives. Yes, even a 10 year old has a “life”. Now, more than ever, these young people are confronted by a plethora of technology together with the moral and ethical decisions that go along with it’s use.
Individual Productivity, Computer Literacy, and Keyboarding will continue to be curricular mainstays of our age-appropriate and sequenced program. This year, however, I will be expanding the “Emerging Culture” aspects of our instruction. Students need more detailed guidance on how to have a safe online experience, to search responsibly, to respect intellectual property, understand the subtleties and consequences of “cyber-bullying”, and to recognize that once information is shared on the internet it is “out there” forever.
During the 2008-09 school year, our Technology Committee completed a 5-year plan for our school’s “technology”. This year we begin to implement the plan. It will be challenging, I look forward to participating with our staff, administration, PTA, and community partners as we work towards our goals.
