Size: They can reach three feet, and they are slow growing.
They reach five inches after one year, and eighteen inches after ten to twenty years.
The males have been aged to 53 years old and the females to thirty years old.
Color: Males- A black head with a pink or red midriff. Females- Are pink with a white chin.
The males also have dog like teeth.
The young ones are gold or salmon with two black spots on the dorsal fin.
They are really cute.
Where They Live:
Range: They are found from Monterey Bay to Guadeloupe Island and into the Gulf of California.
Habitat: They live in water, and are only active in the day.They sleep in caves and in crevices.
They also travel through reefs and in kelp
How They Act:
Diet: They eat hard shelled animals, such as: crabs, barnacles, clams, mussels, and snails.
Reproduction: All sheepheads change sex from female to male, except occasionally it goes the other way. They start changing when they're eight, and it takes less than a year to complete the process.
Fun Facts:
Sheepheads have been reported from shallow subtidal waters to at least 281 feet deep.
Sheephead remains are common in Native American middens.
